Get Gmail Drive in My Computer

Posted in category Computers, Internet, Tips & Tricks

Ever wondered of having a virtual hard drive and use it as easily as your hard drive which is plugged in your computer? Well, now it is possible. Gmail offers a heavy 6GB space which is, for most of the people, unused and if you too can not use all the 6GB space at Gmail, then you may consider using it for storage purpose.

You need to download this small software which will create a virtual file system around your Gmail account and allowing you the space on Gmail to be used for storage purpose. You don’t have to about this software being a spyware or a virus. I have uploaded it myself on the server and is perfectly secure =)

This Virtual Gmail drive will appear in you’re my computer as all the local hard drives installed on your computer appears. This tutorial is like adding a new hard drive to your computer with a few clicks.

Get the software from here.

Once you install this software, a login page will pop up. It will prompt you to login to your Gmail account, once you are done, a new drive will appear in you’re my Computer and then you can easily use it to keep your songs, pictures, PDF files and anything you want. It will be secure.

You must be wondering about how this works on storing files. Well, each time you copy a file to this drive, it creates an email in your inbox and stores it in your account as a attachment. You can easily access your stored files from anywhere by opening your Gmail inbox or searching the file name easily.

What makes this Gmail Drive an awesome tool is its ability to act as a normal hard drive, and you can easily drag and drop files from one folder to another. It’s that simple.

When you try out this tool, and each time you copy a file to Gmail drive, it might make your inbox a bit messy to view for email, to fix this, you can create a filter which will automatically move files to archived mail folder. Use the prefix GMAILFS for the filter.

There is few downside of this too… To use this tool, you need a quality internet connection around 2mb so that the drag and drop transfer goes smooth and easy, it might take ages to transfer a 10mb file on slow connections. Also, this tool does not make use of the full secure internet protocol, which might be a little insecure for your precious files or document, other wise it’s a great tool to try out. I certainly love it.

Also try out the alternative Xmail if you want portability.
