Turn Off Auto Play in Windows XP
Thursday, August 7, 2008 6:05Each time you insert a CD or connect a flash drive to your computer, an annoying pop up greets you, giving you number of options to choose from, yes that is called the Auto play. For some it is really helpful while choosing the actions they want to easily while for me, it got my pc crashed. How? Well, I connected my friends flash drive to my computer to copy off a movie, and as soon as I was done, I tried access my Hard drive, and a start popup started to appear some thing like open with, asking my a program to associate to and that was a virus.
I know there are number of people out there infected for the same stuff so as today I turned off the Autoplay on my computer, I suggested you to turn it off too, and here is how you can do it.
You may find softwares to disable the auto play but I preferred using the Group Policy Editor to do the job. To begin with, you need to open Run from Start button on your bottom left.
You need to type in “grpedit.msc” (without the quotes) and hit enter. You will see a window of Group Policy Editor.
Then, navigate to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System. Then click on System. Scroll down a little to find “Turn off Autoplay” like shown in the screenshot below.

Once you double click that, a new window will pop up “Turn off Autoplay Properties”. From there, select enabled and then all drives from the drop down menu, so that it won’t bug you whether you use a CD or a flash drive on your computer and finally hit the OK button and you are done.
