Must Know Gmail Shortcuts

Earlier I posted some awesome keyboard shortcuts for windows and lately I found this amazing list of Gmail shortcuts. Most of the shortcuts listed are new to me, I hardly knew them, I guess you too won’t know these shortcuts.

To use the shortcuts below, you need to turn these case sensitive shortcuts, on and off from your Gmail Account settings page.

c – Hitting the “c” button on your keyboard takes you to the compose page. You can try “shift + c” to write your message in a new window.
/ – It takes your cursor to the search box on the top of your Gmail account.
n – Takes you to the next message. You can ht enter to expand or collapse the message.
p – Takes you to the previous message.
e – archives you conversation.
s – stars your message or a conversation
! – Marks a message as spam.
r – reply to the message. You can use ‘shift + r’ to open the reply message in a new window.

f – forwards a message. Also, ‘shift + f’ works to open in a new window.
Esc – removes the cursor from a search box or any input field.
ctrl + s – saves your compose message and can be viewed from drafts. Also, make sure the cursor is in the text field when you use this shortcut.
# – sends the conversation to Trash.
shift + i – marks the message as read.
shift + u – marks the message as unread.
[ - archives your message or conversation and moves to the previous one.
] – archives your message or conversation and moves to the next one.
z – undo your previous action like a link.
shift + n – updates the current conversation to see new messages.
q – moves the cursor to the chat search box.
. – shows a drop down menu for more actions.
? – shows the keyboard shortcuts help menu
tab then Enter – when you are done composing your message, you don’t need to move your hand from keyboard to get your mouse to push the send button. Use this shortcut.
g then a – opens the all mail page for your Gmail account.
g then s – opens the stared mails or conversations.
g then d – takes you to the saved drafts.
g then c – opens the contact list.
g then i – takes you to the inbox.
g then t – takes you to the sent mails page.
* then a – selects all the mail. Works in your inbox, all mails, draft, sent emails.
* then n – un select all the email messages.
* then r – selects the emails that you have read.
* then u – selects the unread messages in your inbox.
* then s – selects the starred mails in your all mails page.
* then t – selects the un starred mails.
