Google Wave: The Next Big Thing?

wavelogoAfter Google amazing applications like Gmail, Chrome, instant messaging, Adsense, Labs, Groups, and the search engine itself, and on 28th May, ’08, Google introduced its new upcoming application, Google Wave which promises you a single word, communication, combining all the available applications at one place so it becomes really easy to interact at the same time.
Here is how Google answers what Wave is:

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.
A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.
A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

Google Wave is a new idea of bringing everything to one place and making is more easier to communicate at a fewer clicks! Google Wave divides different types of communications like emails, chats, conversations or documents on a single page, so you can work and communicate together through text, videos or photos you like to share, something like this is the screenshot below:

As a prototype idea, with Google Wave, you can create wave and add people to it, your family, or colleagues for business use or add feeds from different sources on the web, like you can subscribe to Gravity Blue feed and add it as a wave to get real time updates.

Best thing about Google Wave is that, everything is real time and live. When your friend is typing a message, you get to see that, “your friend is typing a message”, or if you are waiting for a message in your email inbox, it’ll show as soon as it appears.

Also, you can use the “playback” feature offered, which you can remind the wave and see how the conversations evolved or what were you doing for a specific time.

Best thing about Google Wave is, it is open source application like Google Chrome, and developers apart from the official team can try their magic to make Google Wave even better.

  • The Google Wave product (available as a developer preview) is the web application people will use to access and edit waves. It’s an HTML 5 app, built on Google Web Toolkit. It includes a rich text editor and other functions like desktop drag-and-drop (which, for example, lets you drag a set of photos right into a wave).
  • Google Wave can also be considered a platform with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to embed waves in other web services, and to build new extensions that work inside waves.
  • The Google Wave protocol is the underlying format for storing and the means of sharing waves, and includes the “live” concurrency control, which allows edits to be reflected instantly across users and services. The protocol is designed for open federation, such that anyone’s Wave services can interoperate with each other and with the Google Wave service. To encourage adoption of the protocol, we intend to open source the code behind Google Wave.

If you cant wait for the official release of the Google Wave and want to be the first one to experience it, then sign up at Google Wave page. Beta versions will start to unroll after a month or so…

Now, about the next big thing? Well, lets see what developers has to come up with different ideas or not, otherwise it will be like another twitter, just in a different way. Other than that, it’s a good idea of combining everything at place to make things easy. It depends if all the service providers combine together for this application through which different people can combine together to hold up a meeting than actually meeting in person and discuss or even create new projects.

We all have to wait how does Google develop the product to its full potential.
