One of the major issues people usually complain is about the weak signal strength of the wireless connection. Although the wireless router says that it can cover a radius of 10 meters but when you’re sitting in the room just below the wireless router is placed, signals starts to distort and bytes are lost.
These problems occur due to a lot of reasons, like objects and other wireless equipment interfering the router signals. To fix all these problem and strengthen the wireless router signal strength, I am sharing different points to help you with it.
- Avoid other wireless equipment around wireless router. Always keep other wireless equipments like cordless phones, garage door openers or mobile phones away from the wireless router. Whenever these devices are activated, they interfere with the signals of the router which causes the signals to scramble. Also try changing the wireless router relay frequency so that other wireless equipments working on the same frequency does not interfere with the signals.
- Always check for router firmware updates. Firmware is a software which is used to operate the router at this optimum level and whenever a new feature or a security fix is found, an update is released from the manufacturer to fix it. So each time a software update is available, download it as soon as possible, because maybe the router manufacturers have released a signal strengthening fix to improve signals. Also keep your computer up to date so that the performance of the router is at optimum level.
- Positioning your wireless router. It is advised to place the router at a place where interference of signals by objects is minimum, somewhere at a center of your home, maybe your lounge so that you get the same signal strength all over your place. Also, never place the router near metallic objects, like file cabinets, they add to the signal loss.
- Use antenna. The antenna which comes with your router spreads the signals in all directions, which results in signals being transmitted out of your place which are useless. You can use a high gain antenna to direct the signals at a restricted direction. Check your router if it allows removable antenna.
- Use repeater to enhance signals. As you move away from the router, the signal strength decreases, to enhance it, you can use a signal repeater which enhances the signals where router’s signals are weak. You can also try the Tin Foil which acts as a reflector. You can make it at your home aswell. Get your self some Tin Foil and cardboard. Stick on the Tin Foil on it and curve it a little. Use some standing device to hold it a bit higher. Then you can position it as you find the signals strength increases.
- Check the network adapter for problems. It is not necessary that the signal problem is due to the router alone, the receiving end, which is the network adapter might have some problems as well. You can check on it by replacing it with other network adapter like the USB network adapters for better performance.
