Smartphone platform is made open source by the use of Symbian mobile operating system. Symbian is one of the most leading smartphone operating system in the world. It was beneficial to have open source for Symbian platform. The five ways to prove that they are beneficial for the smartphone platform:
1. NOKIA : The transition from open source has benefited a lot to Nokia as it increases the efficiency of the wanning platform and that too without any investment from Nokia. Nokia has been developing new devices based on its Linux-based Maemo platform. In spite of this it will definitely gain marketing and public relations boosts from its relationship with Symbian and all its contribution to the development of the smartphone platform.
2. SMARTPHONE MANUFACTURERS : This acts as an alternative to the Google’s Android which is good for the smartphone manufacturers. Android has shown that an open source mobile operating system can work very well as it enables smartphone vendors to customize the OS. It also enables one to develop robust devices at much cheaper price as it doesn’t have associated licensing fees.
3. DEVELOPERS :It’s quite beneficial for the developers as it opens up a huge market for them. It’s not quite as popular as the iPhone App Store but it’s hard to ignore the potential customers it has.
4. BUISNESSES : Making the source code for Symbian OS various companies will benefit from the ability to customize the platform and thus unique applications can be developed.
5. USERS : Symbian users will benefit a great deal from the new creative innovative applications for the smartphones.
