Apple, on July 2,published a press release to new iPhone 4 users about the famous reception problem when gripping the phone in the left hand.  Apparently, the problem is not a faulty design of Apple.  It seems that Apple had a faulty formula that showed the reception higher than it really is and this causes a high amount of loss in reception when the phone is handled tight in hand.  Please read the letter from Apple for further details;
